Smartwool hiking medium crew socks are the most perfect socks I have found, both for hiking and everyday wear. I walk a lot, and my feet tend to get sore, but when I wear my Smartwool socks they feel good all day.
They wick away moisture, so even if they get wet from walking thru a stream or puddle, they still help to keep your feet from getting chafed and blistered. Given their performance when really soaked, just normal sweating from physical activity is easily handled by these great socks!
There is quite a bit of cushioning in these socks, which is one of the things that make them feel so good. They use something they call “wool-on-wool” in the impact zones which means they are thicker in all the right places.
The main ingredient that makes these socks work so well is the Merino Wool that is used. But all Merino Wool socks are not created equally! I did a lot of research on wool socks to see if there was a better one out there, and while there were others that people thought were ok, Smartwool was preferred by most – including those on our Facebook page.
The toe seams are flat, which keeps blisters from forming there – this is a big plus.
These socks do not tend to lose their shape even after a lot of washing (I’ve washed mine HUNDREDS of times and they are still good!). Just be sure you follow the manufacturer’s suggestions when washing them.
